Copal has always been a universal balm to purify and release negative energies. Mayans were used to the copal before the arrival of the Spaniards, who later used it to purify their churches.

Formerly it was used medicinally, for respiratory tract problems and as an oral antiseptic. Nowadays, the incense burners usually bite the copal to break it, because there is a bit of resin in the mouth that sanitizes and releases pathogens.
Its aroma was perceived with great frequency in houses, temples and offerings in almost all pre-Hispanic civilizations. At homes, there was always a special place for an altar, therefore, every day copal was burned during prayers.
